Christmas e-card?

It has become a common practice to send friends and family an electronic card for their birthday or a holiday, including Christmas. And it is easy to see that there are numerous good reasons for doing so. The price of Christmas greeting cards and stamps have risen to a level that makes sending Christmas cards an expensive hobby. These days everybody has access to a computer, so anyone can receive a card for Christmas. The Christmas e-cards have become very sophisticated, with great animation. Something that is not possible at that level with a Christmas post card. Another advantage of the email christmas card is the fact that you do not have to worry about the timely arrival of your card at its destination. Even friends and family that live far away can receive your card practically instantaneous.

Why is it, than, that there is still a large population, that will not send email Christmas cards, even if they have no problem sending email cards during the rest of the year? It seems that tradition plays an important role here. Christmas cards, by tradition, are displayed during the holiday season and make for a very festive picture. Furthermore, if the receiver looks at your card, chances are that it will bring back memories and it will make them think of you. And this is something we all appreciate at the end of the year. It makes for the special Christmas atmosphere.

What do you think? Do you prefer a Christmas post card, or is an Christmas e-card just as good for you. Share your opinions. Fill out the comment form and let others know what you think.

Who invented the Christmas card?

In 1840 in London, England, a British narrative painter named John Callcott Horsley designed the very first commercial Christmas card.  Sir Henry Cole, first director of the Victoria and Albert Museum and a friend of Horsley, requested he do this.  The one thousand Christmas and New Year’s cards he designed never went on sale until 1843.  Controversy surrounded the card because it depicted a family toasting Christmas.  Although puritans denounced it immediately, many others loved the idea.  Other artists followed Horsley’s example, as the Christmas card became exceedingly popular.  In 1849, English artist William Egley designed an extremely popular Christmas card.  New years greeting cards, on the other hand, had been around since 1796 when merchants sent them to their customers.  These cards usually said best wishes for the New Year.  The fashionable Christmas cards gradually replaced the New Year’s cards.

How to plan a Christmas Party – Tips from the Pros I

In part I of this series we discuss the general preparation for a Christmas party. In subsequent articles we will go into more detail in things like Christmas party themes and Christmas party food. We will also discuss Christmas party invitations in more detail. So, be on the look out for them.

Everyone knows the month of December is full of shopping, cooking, and Christmas parties.  Many people enjoy entertaining during the holiday season.  Unfortunately, issues do arise, such as scheduling problems. Furthermore, money always gets tight right before Christmas.  Don’t let that stop you though.  If you want to throw a Christmas party for your friends and family there are some important tips to keep in mind.

The first thing to do when deciding to have a Christmas party is start planning well in advance.  December is a busy month and getting the ball rolling early will be a huge help in your preparations.  So step by step, here is how it should go.  Decide on your guest list.  If your budget is limited (and who’s isn’t during the holidays?) you may want to put a number cap on your list.  Also be aware that space is an issue as well.  Overcrowding into a small area does not make for a merry party.  This is also the time to decide if you want to go the potluck way or handle all of the food yourself.

The next step in your Christmas party preparations is to send out your Christmas party invitations.  Be sure to give guests as much notice as possible and, to avoid confusion, call, mail, or email everyone on the same day.  This just avoids hurt feelings.  No one wants to feel like an afterthought.  This is also the time to include a brief note mentioning the potluck theme if that is the way you decided to go.  Check back with any potential guests who may not have responded in a week.  A quick phone call should work fine.

Now that you have a good idea on how many people will be attending your Christmas party, you can start to think about the menu.  Make a list for the grocery store, being sure to estimate high on the cost.  If things look a little pricier than you intended, look the list over again to see if you can eliminate any items.  Don’t forget to include paper napkins, plates, and plastic ware.  Of course if you are having a more formal party those things won’t be a concern.  Go to the store, stick to your list, and get ready to party.

Having a Christmas party can be the highlight of your holiday season.  If you are prepared in advance, there is no reason why you can’t enjoy the party as much as your guests.  Accept any help that is offered, cook your behind off, and celebrate the holidays with those nearest and dearest to you.

How to choose Christmas recipes that are favorites with everyone and still leave you time to spent with your guests.

There are many different Christmas recipes that you can use at Christmas time. For most people who celebrate Christmas, the holiday season is characterized by gathering of family and friends, feasting and giving gifts to each other. Christmas would be incomplete without the mention of Santa Claus, Christmas trees, mistletoe, Christmas cakes, cookies, puddings, other Christmas goodies and cards.

Christmas recipe planning should be done with the precision and advance preparation of a military operation, so that the cook will enjoy it too. All the extra items that are needed for any Christmas recipes should be thought of well ahead of time. It is a good idea that you sit down and choose your Christmas recipes for the cake, puddings and meat, and then list all the ingredients that you will need for each of them. A good plan would be to start doing this in November.

At the beginning of December, decide on what meat you are going to buy and find out how much it will cost-at least this way you’ve made a start. Whether you are eating turkey or ham, any Christmas recipes just wouldn’t be complete without all the trimmings.

Whether the Christmas recipes are designed to be eaten formally at the table or buffet style-try to focus on foods such as roasts or casseroles. These may take a while to cook, but won’t need your constant attention in the kitchen. Whoever does the Christmas catering must also be able to enjoy themselves with everyone else, without having to spend too much time in the kitchen.

Buffets are a great way to manage feeding a crowd. Get as much done with your Christmas recipes as you can the day before-focus on foods that can be eaten at room temperature. It will save you a lot of time and work. Cover the food and remove it just before people go up to eat. When your guests walk through the door on Christmas day let the smells of all those Christmas recipes hit them. Keep a pot of mulled apple cider on the stove so the first thing that you can smell is a delightful mixture of cinnamon, clove and nutmeg.

Make extra large batches of items like spiced nuts, salad dressing or gingerbread in advance. The Christmas cake and most puddings should be made a month beforehand. If you’re not sure what to give them for dessert-solve the dilemma by asking your guests to bring a batch of their favorite Christmas deserts. Your guests can then show off their best Christmas recipes and everyone will enjoy the variety.

How did the Christmas tree become part of the Christmas tradition?

The fir tree was a Pagan symbol for winter. They had the habit of decorating the trees. 1,000 year ago, St Boniface, who converted the German people to Christianity, was said to have come across a group of Pagans worshipping an oak tree. In anger, St Boniface is said to have cut the oak tree. To everyones amazement a young fir tree sprung up from the roots of the oak tree. St Boniface took this as a sign of the Christian faith. This believe was past on from generation to generation and in the 16th century the fir tree was brought into the home at Christmas time and decorated. The Christmas tree tradition has begon.

How to stay within budget this Christmas.

No matter how careful you budget throughout the year, Christmas and the holiday season seem to result in additional costs and extra “must have” items that often ruin even the most carefully planned out budget. There are many different ways that you can use, to help keep yourself within your Christmas spending allowance.

With a bit of planning and organization you will be amazed at how easy it is to keep costs down and still have an amazing and wonderful Christmas season. Often people get too caught up in the glamour and glitz of the season and forget it is about family and friends and spending time together.

The following tips and tricks for lowering your Christmas expenses are easy to do and fun as well. Remember to be creative and you will be amazed at how much money you can save over the holiday season.

Have a clear vision of your priorities. Remind yourself and your entire family of the reasons you had for getting on a budget in the first place.

Make a complete gift shopping list and then prioritize it according to your relationship with that person. Immediate family comes first, extended family, friends, co-workers, etc. Start at the bottom and cross off any names that absolutely don’t need to be there – then assign a portion of your budget to each of the remaining names.

If you have a talent, and everyone does, why not consider using that to make some or even all of your Christmas gifts. Those that enjoy woodworking, painting or even needlepoint or knitting can easily use their spare time hobby to create memorable and relatively inexpensive gifts for family and friends.

Make Some Of Your Own Decorations and Ornaments. Not only is making your own decorations and ornament economical but it is a great way to spend time with your family and get the kids involved in helping out with Christmas.

One of the best ways to keep Christmas decorating costs down is to purchase or make items that can be used for more than one type of decoration or used in multiple places in the home. Items that are non-perishable or can be kept from year to year are also more cost effective over time than are use and dispose of items.

Christmas can be an expensive holiday but it doesn’t have to be. By taking some time and shopping wisely, planning and sticking to your budget and cutting some corners where you can it is possible to have a very fancy Christmas on a very minimal budget.

Control your Christmas budget

Why are we decorating our Christmas tree?

According to legend, Martin Luther began the tradition of decorating trees to celebrate Christmas. One crisp Christmas Eve, about the year 1500, he was walking through snow-covered woods and was struck by the beauty of a group of small evergreens. Their branches, dusted with snow, shimmered in the moonlight. When he got home, he set up a little fir tree indoors so he could share this story with his children. He decorated it with candles, which he lighted in honor of Christ's birth.
